Information about Diagnostic Examinations Requested by Nurse Practitioners

Nurse Practitioners can request and/or interpret any diagnostic imaging examination within their employed scope of practice. This includes CT scans, MRIs, and echocardiograms, for example. However, the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) does not subsidise the costs of every diagnostic imaging examination an NP can request. Below are some infographics that provide a summary of which diagnostic imaging examinations are subsidised by the MBS when requested by an NP.

Diagnostic Radiography for NPs

This is a little project I’ve been working on that I hope others will find useful.

I still get a lot of questions regarding which diagnostic radiographic examinations an NP can request, which will be subsidised by the MBS. As long as these examinations fall within your scope of practice, you can order them!
